The interview with Cassie
By Gemma

On the 19th of August all of year 8 and some of the primary school students had a visit from the young farming champion Cassie. Cassie presented a power point presentation explaining her journey into the dairy farming industry and what it’s all about. Once Cassie finished her presentation all of year 8 left while the primary students stayed. With the primary students, two year 8 students stayed to interview Cassie. Here are some of the questions that were asked:
Why did you get into farming?
When Cassie was a young child her family lived in Wollongong and they then moved to a remote community with a very small population. Cassie later attended Hurlstone Agricultural High School. At her new school they had an agricultural farm. Cassie had chosen agriculture as one of her subject and she started to get involved in looking after cows, she did this because she wanted to become a vet.
What drew you to the dairy industry?
Cassie had started this program as a subject at her boarding school. Cassie became passionate about dairy farming and started to spend more time with the cows and learning how to care for them.
How is the dairy industry sustainable?
The dairy industry is sustainable by the new technology that is being brought in to the farming industry. Farmers will try and breed better cows and will grow better food to give the cows the nutrients they need. By doing this the cows will produce better quality milk and calves.
What is the nutrient cycle?
The nutrient cycle is Minerals, energy (carbohydrates). Cows eat the food. The cows then dispose of that food waste that waste goes into the ground and fertilizes plants. When the cows die they fertilise the soil.
